      Malaysia, Malaysian Chess Festival

      Spoilt for choice
      Chess
      By QUAH SENG SUN

The Kuala Lumpur open tournament will be held in September.

NO sooner did I write about the Malaysia Chess Festival which runs from Aug 22 to 31 – a full 10 days of non-stop chess that includes the Merdeka team rapid chess tournament – that I learnt of yet another international chess tournament in the country.

Hot on the heels of the IGB Arthur Tan Malaysia open and the Chess Challengers tournaments comes the Kuala Lumpur open tournament, which will be held from September 3 to 9.

This means that for the serious chess player, the long time control tournaments are simply following one after another.

Both foreign and local players will indeed be spoilt for choice but in all likelihood, we shall see different classes of players for the three events.

It will be a rare player indeed who has the time to play chess almost continuously for three weeks, yet we cannot really discount the true chess professionals who do little else than earn a living from playing competitive chess.

        to anon,

oh yeah, a nation with just 2 IMs & 0 GM, is a good chess nation. Even Vietnam & Thailand have few GM and some IM at least..

btw, i am from malaysia and i know chess is lacking support from the govt. There is no proper chess website in malaysia too. Either the website is poorly managed or a dormant one..
