      Ulaanbaatar

On August 19, the FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, arrived in Ulaanbaatar to participate in the opening ceremony of the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad. 34 teams have registered for the event. Several other events will take place at the same time with World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad: “Mongolia Open”, Trainer’s and Arbiter’s seminars, “Chess in Schools” committee meeting , chess problems solving competition and a course of managing of electronic chess clocks.

Upon arrival, Mr. Ilyumzhinov met the minister of Sports and Health Gankhuyag Shiilegdamba . He noted that it is not the first time Mongolia has organised a FIDE event. One of the stages of FIDE Women’s Grand Prix series has already taken place in Ulaanbaatar.

Last year Mr. Ilyumzhinov visited a great event – Chess Festival 9999 in the province of Zavkhan in which more than ten thousand school students took part. The event is being registered by the Guinness Book of Records right now. President of FIDE thanked the ministry of Sports and Health of Mongolia and the Mongolian Government for support of Chess in Schools project. 70 million Tughriks were allocated for carrying out the project. Also it was noted that the first Mongolian students in FIDE’s quota have already enrolled for the study of chess the Russian higher education institutions. Mr. Ilyumzhinov emphasized that the work of Mongolia Chess federation has become very active after the election of Mr. Tserendorj Sainbayar as President of the Federation in May.

President’s office, Government buildings are stading around huge Chinggis Khaan square which is located in the center of Ulaanbaatar.

Monument to the greatest Mongolian – Chinggis Khaan is standing right at the entrance to Great Khural building.
