      Make this chess move like a hawk

      Black to move and mate

      This week’s position illustrates the queen-bishop mating pattern.

      Black uses this theme to mate white in three moves. With this hint in mind please try and find the solution. In chess notation, the board is a grid: the vertical columns are numbered “1” through “8;” the horizontal rows, “a” through “h.” Each square on the board is identified by a specific letter and number.

      For example, if the black knight at c6 were to take the white pawn at d4, the notation would be nxd4 (n=knight, b=bishop, q=queen, k=king, x=takes, +=check, etc.).
