      Initiatives help prepare Hispanic youths for leadership roles

      While population figures for Hispanics have boomed, their political representation has only grown at a measured pace. Their lack of political clout was most obvious during the last failed attempt at immigration reform in Congress.

      So how do you prepare future generations of Latinos to lead?

      Some believe it’s best to start developing leadership skills from the very beginning, among elementary school-age children. At Blanton Elementary School in East Dallas, for example, the staff introduced a chess program three years ago to help students develop strategic thinking. It works.
