      Chess Wizard Sohal Wins Again

      Chess Wizard Sohal Wins Again
South Asian Link – Vancouver, BC, Canada

SURREY – Renowned chess wizard Tanraj Sohal was once again the winner of the BC Provincial Chess Championship in his age group.

Sohal, a grade 7 student from Surrey and the son of local physician Dr. Parmjit Sohal, won the BC Chess Challenge held on April 4, 2009 at BCIT in Burnaby.

He earlier won the Fraser Valley Regional Chess Championship held in Surrey on February 22.

Sohal, who is also the 2008 Canadian Chess Champion in his age group, is headed to Ontario with the other provincial winners to represent the BC Chess Team at the Canadian Chess Challenge to be held in Toronto in May, 2009.

Is he really good or is it hype?

@anon 6:43 I think the first sentence of the article is the problem A lot of hyperbole there:
Renowned chess wizard… (when no one has heard of him other than people in BC probably)
The rest of the article just stated the facts that he’s been winning a lot of tournaments and is someone to watch in the future.

He is 13 years old and he is also BC Junior Champion (under 21), in the last (Vietnam 2008) World Youth Chess Championship he tied for 19th place. The only (honest) mistake is the fact that he is not Canadian age champion (the age group goes in by group of 2 years) instead he is Canadian grade champion for grade 6(in 2008), grade 5 (2007), grade 3 (2005), grade 2 (2004) – 4 times!
