Sergey Karjakin moves to Moscow, changes to Russia Chess Federation

Following the news that Sergey Karjakin will transfer to the Russian chess federation, “Fakti” correspondent GM Dmitry Komarov spoke with Sergey’s father Alexander Karjakin.
– “Our family has filed documents to obtain Russian citizenship” – Alexander Karjakin confirmed for newspaper Fakti – “This was Sergey’s solution. We do not have any issues with Ukraine. Here we did everything possible, but unfortunately it is not enough for Sergey to fulfill his dream and become a world champion. We moved to Moscow, where Sergey will be trained by two highly qualified Grandmasters. We would not be able to pull the costs of their payment on our own. There are also other arrangements, of which I do not want to speak at the present. Our decision was met with understanding in Kiev and Simferopol. To all the people that have helped us, we have previously advised about this possibility: In private conversations they agreed that this will be better. Sergey will play at the Foros tournament, which starts on 25th June. Nobody revoked his invitations.”
Dmitry Komarov also mentions the speculation that the decision of the young Grandmaster was influenced by his Russian coach GM Yuri Dohoyan, who for many years successfully assisted Garry Kasparov’s preparation.
Other Ukrainian chess players are also ready to seek better future in other countries. – “If I was presented with the opportunity, I would have changed the federation, while remaining a citizen of Ukraine” – ex-world champion Ruslan Ponomariov stated earlier for “Fakti”.
Former champion of Ukraine, GM Alexander Berelovich, switched to German Chess Federation according to an urgent procedure that costs 3200 EUR.
Fellow Ukrainian Grandmaster Pavel Eljanov, who is also playing in Nalchik Grand Prix, supports Karjakin’s decision.
