China is also doing pretty well in the World Women’s Team Chess Championship. They now find themselves just one step away from the title. The fifth round was a rather one-sided affair, with the Chinese thrashing their Ukrainian opponents by 3 and a half points to half a point.
The Chinese team stamped their authority over Ukraine from the very beginning. At the first table, Zhao Xue dominated her game against Katerina Lahno and held that position to the end.
The youngest participant Hou Yifan showed confidence in outplaying Anna Ushenina.
The other table saw tougher resistance, when Inna Gaponenko improved her team’s situation by agreeing a draw with Ruan Lufei.
But at the fourth table, Shen Yang crushed Oksana Vazovic. Finally the Ukrainians managed only half a point.
Chinese team player Zhao Xue said, “After beating Ukraine 3 and a half points to one half, I can say that we are already very close to the championship. At least we’ve seen it and there is just one step to it now.”
China will next face Armenia in round Six on Saturday.

Susan, thanks for publishing my comment and let me tell you how wonderfull taste you have in selecting your pics: I think many of those photos FABULOUS!!!
Congratulations for this magical blog of yours.
I wonder…are these Chinese women doing the chess version of “caterpillar fungus”?
The russians were taught a lesson, and should never attempt to defy this group anytime soon.
This is probably what the russians get for throwing Kasparov in the slammer…
Ahh China crushed ;-p
China’s team is without the
FIDE World Champion, Xu Yuhua,
who’s on maternity leave.
Please explain, what is this caterpillar fungus you mentioned and how does it apply to chess match?
Trying to be frank, let me confess: This china great preformance makes me think they are a superior race or even worst that they are mastering our culture and we know almost nada about theirs. So they actually have a bonus over us white people. All the above true only if the assumption that chess is a western culture game be right. I really don’t know the history of the game of chess in China. Only I know chess had originated in the east but was it played there during the last thousand years, I have no substantial knowledge.
I guess it can be taken rather hard and gloomy – for a white person – to view China people overpower the Europeans also in chess. They do it already in so many other realms of life. And it might be only a sign indication for a future wider china dominance. But who knows what the future will bring. I can only think of this line from Hamlet:
“There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy”.
