      District to send chess winners to state

      The Reporter-Herald

      The Thompson School District will pay to send the first-place winners of the district’s Feb. 2 chess tournament to the state competition Feb. 16-17.

      All students who participated in the tournament are eligible to compete at the state level.

      The top three placings in each age category were:

      • Kindergarten through third grade (19 entrants): Joshua Stackhouse, Cottonwood Plains Elementary School third-grader, first place; Lorenzo Scalise, Van Buren Elementary third-grader, second place; Luke Slayback, Stansberry Elementary third-grader, third place.

      • Fourth through sixth grade (28 entrants): Jacob Schafer, Van Buren fifth-grader, first place; Nathan Denesha, Turner Middle School sixth-grader, second place; Dorian Dittmar, Van Buren fifth-grader, third place.

      • Seventh through ninth grade (12 entrants): Spencer Golsan, Berthoud High School freshman, first place; Kevin Green, Turner seventh-grader, second place; Jasmine Schafer, Thompson Valley High School freshman, third place.

      • Tenth through 12th grade (four entrants): Aaron Van Handel, Thompson Valley junior, first place; Sean McBride, Thompson Valley junior, second place; Sarah Hickman, Berthoud senior, third place.
