The problem with 1. Rd4+ is that the White Queen is blocked from getting back into the game:

        1. Rd4+ ? Kf3! and not (1. … Kxg5? 2. Bd3+ Kh5 3.Be2+ Rf3 4. Bxf3 mate) and there is no mate that I can see.

But 1. Qd4+ mate for sure.

        1. Qd4+ and Black can play either 1. … Kxg5 or 1. … Kf3

        1. Qd4+ Kxg5
        2. Rg1+ Kh6
        3. Qh4+ Kg7
        4. Qe7+ Rf7 (4. … Kh8 or Kh6 5. Qh7 mate)
        5. Qxf7+ and mate next move.

        Finally, the 1. … Kf3 variation after 1. Qd4+

        1. Qd4+ Kf3
        2. Bh5+ Kg2
        3. Qe4+

(it’s important to put the queen on a white square now, and now Black has 3 choices: … Kxh2, … Kh3, and … Kf2

        3. … Kxh2
        4. Rh1+ Kg3
        5. Rg1+ and mate in 1 after any Black continuation.

        3. … Kf2
        4. Qe2 mate

        3. … Kh3
        4. Qg4+ Kxh2
        5. Qg1+ Kh3
        6. Rd3+ and Black can try 2 desperation interpose moves, or get mated immediately after

        6. … Kh4
        7. Qg4 mate.

Hello, Yancey. I’m in a bit of a nostalgic mood after working hard today, and having wine and cheese afterwards. Anyway, I was thinking over old times. Do you remember this one?

Hello, sorry Yancey isn’t always on at weekends and doesn’t always look for older comments.
