      Deepan, three others share lead

      NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy defeated young talent K. Priyadarshan to be among the four leaders after three rounds of the second Subic International Open chess tournament at Subic in the Philippines on Tuesday.

      On a double-round day, when several Indian GMs failed to maintain perfect scores, Madurai-based Deepan shared the lead with Vietnam’s Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, China’s Xiu Deshun and the Philippines’ Richard Bitoon.

      The day saw top seed Surya Shekhar Ganguly draw with China’s untitled youngster Yu Yangyi, who earlier in the day accounted for third seed Parimarjan Negi.Abhijeet loses

      World junior champion and fifth seed Abhijeet Gupta lost to Xiu Deshun while Sandipan Chanda, seeded six, drew with Chinese International Master Yang Kaiqi.

      In the second round, Priyadarshan upstaged 11th seeded Vietnamese GM Nguyen Anh Dung.

      The results (involving Indians): Third round: Surya Shekhar Ganguly (3.5) drew with Yu Yangyi (Chn, 2.5); Abhijeet Gupta (2) lost to Xiu Deshun (Chn, 3); Sandipan Chanda (2.5) drew with Yang Kaiqi (Chn, 2.5); Deepan Chakkravarthy (3) bt K. Priyadarshan (2); Parimarjan Negi (1.5) drew with Zhang Ziyang (Chn, 1.5); Susanto Megaranto (Ina, 1.5) drew with Aswin Jayaram (1.5); Jia Haoxiang (Chn, 1.5) drew with Abhijit Kunte (1.5); Tania Sachdev (2) bt Chua Zhang Yuan Terry (Sin, 1); Tejas Ravichandran (1) drew with R. Legaspi (Phi, 1); Ronald Bancod (Phi, 0.5) lost to C. J. Arvind (1.5); John Morazo (Phi, 1) drew with Nisha Mohota (1); Chua Aaron (0.5) drew with Kruttika Nadig (0.5).

      Second round: Julio Gatalino Sadorra (Phi) lost to Ganguly; Yu Yangyi (Chn) bt Negi; Mas Hafizulhelmi (Mas) lost to Gupta; Chanda bt Tania; Priyadarshan bt Nguyen Anh Dung (Vie); Wang Li (Chn) lost to Deepan; Aswin drew with Nguyen Thanh Son (Vie); Arvind lost to Jony Habla (Phi); Kunte bt Tejas; Chua Zheng Yuan Terry bt Kruttika; Nisha drew with Uuganbayar Lkhamsuren (Mgl).
