Dominguez and Bruzon qualify for World Cup

      Bruzon, Leinier Dominguez

Cuban Leinier Absolute Winner at Dominican Chess Tournament
      Santo Domingo, Mar 28, 2011

The Central American and Caribbean Tournament held in Santiago de los Caballeros closed with the victory of Cuban GM Leinier Dominguez. Dominguez, with 11 of the 12 possible points, and Lazaro Bruzon, with 10.5 points, qualified for the World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, in May.

Third in the medal table was Mexican GM Manuel Leon, while Dominican IM Lisandro Munoz was fourth, Humberto Pecorelli, the Cuban coach of the Dominican players told Prensa Latina.

Cubans Dominguez and Bruzon added points to their ELO and Leinier now has 2726 and Lazaro 2693, said Pecorelli.

The next challenge will be the other qualifying tournament in Mexico, but both Leinier and Lazaro will only have to add points to their ELO, because they already qualified for the World Cup.

I am a big fan of Leinier. You have to think of how hard it is for a Cuban chess player to be at the hight level chess is today. Just consider they don’t have a decent internet connection. I come from Cuba, and my daughter lives in a town next to Leinier’s. Believe me, I know what I am saying. For all this, congratulations Leinier! We follow you all over the world!
