Dubai Chess Club reaches out to young talents

Dubai: Dubai Chess and Culture Club has launched new plans to attract children into chess. Grandmasters, whom youngsters looks up to as idols, will be giving tips.

This club concluded first of its training programmes for more than 40 promising youngsters. This eight-week training programme was organised in collaboration with Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc).

Speaking to Gulf News, Yahya Mohammad Saleh, Planning and Development Manager of the club, after distributing certificates for children, who completed the training programme, said: “We organise specialised training sessions as part of the club’s ongoing efforts to popularise the game. We stage various corporate events too for chess enthusiasts by providing easy access to professional training materials and coaching resources. The feedback from children and even parents, who play in our events, are encouraging.”

The club had organised a tournament for Enoc employees last year and ever since this company has actively taken part in club’s various programmes. Yahya presented an award to Enoc’s Shaikha Al Hadad, Senior Manager Wellness and Social Affairs, for their support.

“We organised training programme specifically for children of Enoc employees. Soon we will be organising similar training activities for other corporate partners too,” added Yahya.

As start of the plan, Croatian Grandmaster (GM) Davorin Kuljasevic spearheaded the training sessions along with Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Andjelija Stojanovic for children of various age categories.

“There were training sessions for children 6 to 10 years old and 11 to 15 years old. Through our Corporate Chess Training Programme conducted by the club’s internationally certified instructors and Grandmaster coaches, students can get to learn crucial skills that will help them improve quickly and enjoy the health and intellectual benefits of playing chess,” said Yahya.
