Forget the Yankees, the Edward R. Murrow High School chess team is New York’s greatest sports dynasty.
The pride of Midwood won the National High School Chess Championships in Nashville, Tenn. Sunday — the Brooklyn squad’s eighth victory at the tournament that featured over 5,000 would-be Bobby Fischers.
And they’re not going to Disney World.
“We’re all going to go to Dave and Busters! No more chess! We’re done with that — we’re celebrating,” said cunning strategist, Azeez Alade, the 17-year-old junior originally from Nigeria.
The students competed from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. for three days starting Friday, but their confidence rarely wavered.
“I was just taking it one game at a time — I never really felt too overburdened or an extreme amount of pressure,” said the team captain, Alex Ostrovskiy, who is known for his encylopedic knowledge of opening maneuvers and the appropriate level of chess swagger.
