Emily Hasch wins Girl’s event

Concordia Girl Crowned Chess Champion

Once each year, the top female chess players, in grades K-10, square off across chessboards to compete for the title of Kansas State Girl’s Champion.

On Saturday, March 27, Emily Hasch, a tenth grader from Concordia, won the coveted championship at the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg, KS. “Emily had an incredible tournament; she won every game,” said Karpov Chess School Director Tom Brownscombe.

Home schooled student Hannah Purdy of Oxford, sixth grader Sarah Myose of Sunrise Christian Academy, eighth grader Rachel Hasch of Concordia, sixth grader Genesis Lopez of Gordon Parks, and first grader Caroline Jiang of Sunrise Christian Academy tied for second place with three out of a possible four points. Defending champion Hannah Purdy took home the second place trophy on tie breaks, and Sarah Myose received the third place trophy.

“We are trying to encourage more girls to play chess, and we proud to host the Girl’s Championship again,” said Marck Cobb, president of the International Chess Institute of the Midwest (ICIM).

Chess School director Tom Brownscombe organized and directed the event. The Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization. The next chess tournament at the Karpov Chess School will be the April quads on April 24th.
