IN a bid to develop young chess players in Suva, the Fiji Chess Federation will be running chess clinics every Sunday.
Federation President Dr Virgilio De Asa said the clinic would encourage beginners to understand the basics of the game and also allow active players to train and reach intermediate levels.
“The main objective is to develop the pool of younger chess players in Fiji,” de Asa said.
“The target group will be learning how to play the game of chess and for others, they can come and strengthen their existing skills,” he said.
He said the clinic also applied to the seniors who had played chess in their younger days because no one was too old to play chess.
“There will be coaching sessions for both beginners and chess enthusiasts and there will be friendly games and open discussions on standard openings, middle game and endgame tactics.”
“There is a lot of untapped potential in Fiji when it comes to chess and chess clinics are the best ground to identify young players who can become tomorrow’s sporting masterminds,” de Asa said.
General Secretary of the Federation, Krishneel Nair said the clinics were free and anyone who was interested could register.
“The clinic will be open to all, irrespective of age, gender and player skill level,” Nair said.
“The first chess clinic will be held tomorrow at the Fiji School of Medicine’s Pasifika Campus from 9:30am to 12pm,” he said.
