        i wish i could play one tournament and make enough to live on for one year…

        I wonder … were there any IM or GM norms made at this tournament? (I presume Robert Hess got a “spare” norm for his fine score.)

        Anonymous, I feel your pain. I console myself that whatever amount of money I could make, I could spend it just as fast or faster.

        I remember reading about San Antonio 1972, big money for the time, where the top three finishers split $7,000. From 9th to 16th the payoff was $25 a point. Anthony Saidy dragged out his final game against Larry Evans to a stupefying 106 moves just to try to win an extra $12.50.
