Multi-faceted candidate to make his way to Parliament
      Wednesday, July 18, 2007

An engineer, a creator of brain teasers, a drummer but also a politician: Emrehan Halıcı, a candidate running in the upcoming elections has quite an unusual story when compared to rival candidates

FULYA ÖZERKANANKARA – Turkish Daily NewsTo be honest, the term “politician” usually carries a somewhat negative connotation to many. Turks mostly do not trust politicians and indeed, consider them to be a bunch of boring people who have no interest in the colorful side of life. But not all of them are so.

Born in 1956 in the central Anatolian province of Konya, Halıcı graduated from the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ). As an electronics engineer, he developed a number of projects both at home and abroad in the area of computers and software, and became one of the pioneers in the promotion and spread of computer-supported music technology in Turkey. In 2004, ODTÜ students awarded him as an “Ideal Engineer.” Furthermore, he chaired the Turkish Chess Federation between 1992 and 1999 and acted as vice president of the World Chess Federation between 1998 and 2002. Keen on activities exercising intelligence, Halıcı is a member of Mensa International, a worldwide forum for intellectual exchange among members, and president of the Turkish Intelligence Foundation.
