Gelfand-Morozevich match alongside Zurich Chess Challenge

Alexander Morozevich, Boris Gelfand, Chess match, Zurich

      Gelfand-Morozevich

The organizers of Zurich Chess Challenge 2016 prepared a pleasant surprise for all chess enthusiasts – an exhibition match between Boris Gelfand (Israel) and Alexander Morozevich (Russia) will be played on February 13.

The main idea of the match is to promote the new time control suggested by Oleg Skvortsov, main sponsor of the event. The match will consist of two rapid games, and two more blitz games will be played in case of a tie. If the winner is not determined after four games, the players will proceed to the Armageddon game.

The Zurich Chess Challenge 2016 super tournament will be played on February 12-15 in the Savoy Baur en Ville hotel.

The participants are Vishy Anand (India), Vladimir Kramnik (Russia), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Levon Aronian (Armenia), Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Alexei Shirov (Latvia).

The world’s oldest chess club and businessman Oleg Skvortsov, one of the sponsors of the event, suggested a new time control for classical chess tournaments: 40 minutes plus 10 second per move for the entire game.

      Schedule of the tournament

February 12, 6 pm local time – opening ceremony with concert of Boris Andrianov (cello), Dmitry Illarionov (classical guitar), and Alena Baeva (violin).

The drawing of lots will be done as a blitz tournament, as usual.

      February 13, 3 pm – round 1, 4 pm – round 2
      February 14, 3 pm – round 3, 4 pm – round 4
February 15, 3 pm – round 5, 4 pm – blitz tournament with colors reversed, 8 pm – closing ceremony

All games will be streamed and commented online. The attendance to the playing hall is free.

Sponsors: Zurich Chess Club, IGC International Gemological Laboratories.
