Play chess with a grandmaster tonight

Chess is one of the oldest skill games in recorded history. The first records of chess date to 600 A.D., while the modern chess game we play today dates to the 15th century. Think you have skills? Try your hand at a game with a grandmaster of chess, Lubomir Ftacnik.

The S.C. Chess Association is hosting Ftacnik, who is from Slovakia. He will play up to 25 simultaneous games of chess tonight at Dutch Square Mall, 421 Bush River Road.

Bring your thinking cap and some good luck, because during Ftacnik’s 2006 tour of S.C., he was undefeated in several simultaneous chess exhibitions held in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville.

Grandmaster Ftacnik holds a degree in semiconductor physics, speaks five languages fluently, was the European junior champion in 1976-77 and was co-champion of the 2006 National Open held in Las Vegas. He earned the grandmaster title in 1980.

Games will begin as early as 6 p.m., and challenges will be accepted until 7. The cost to play is a $10 donation, which benefits scholastic chess in S.C.. Students pay $5. The event is sponsored by Precision Tune Auto Care.

Yes, it is very nice of GM Ftacnik to hold this event for the chess players of SC.

But what about moving up one state? 🙂
