LINGAYEN, Pangasinan Dec. 18 — International Grandmaster John Paul Gomez yesterday took the 4th Amado T. Espino Jr. Open Chess Cup title, winning the tournament with 6 points.

The Laguna City native grandmaster was undefeated in the field tournament with 94 participants, including nine national masters (NM), two FIDE masters (FM) and two international masters (IM), and two grandmasters (GM).

Pangasinan’s FIDE Master Haridas Pascua also collected 6 points from a total seven rounds, but had to concede to second place for having lower tie-break score.

The champion received P20,000, while the second placer, P10,000.

NM Raymond Salcedo took third place with 6 points, while IM Ronald Dableo, GM Darwin Laylo, NM Nelson Mariano III, NM Alcon Datu, IM Chito Garma and NM Ronald Llavanes tied for fourth to ninth place with 5.5 points each. Pangasinan’s Dick Gicain took the 10th place with 5 points.

Special awards went to Gicain as the tournament’s top senior player; Pascua and country’s youngest NM Giovanni Mejia as top junior players; Jan Jodilyn Fronda Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia and Mary Joy Roca as top lady players.

Pascua and Gicain, along with Gerard Lalas, also took the top local player awards.

Meanwhile, the lower age brackets saw San Fabian town Brylle Gever Vinluan winning the under-14 category, and Danever James Ubando, the under-10 category.

Vinluan took the title by scoring 6 points, half a point ahead of Juan Carlos Presente, and a point ahead of Artrino Paul Fortin, Jerome Junio and Jan Marx Anastacio.

Ubando, a resident of Dagupan City, on the other hand, posted 6 points along with John Ruiz Bravo, who took the second place based on lower tie-break score.

The tournament was organized by the Pangasinan Chess League (formerly known as Pangasinan Chess Federation) and sponsored by the provincial government. (ANL/ARRF-PIA 1 Pangasinan)
