Bum Rush the Boards Hip-Hop Chess Tournament
Saturday, April 18, at the Columbia Heights Community Center
      By Jeff Winkler
      Posted: April 15, 2009

Here’s a little game. Who said, “The game of chess is like a sword fight: you must think before you move”? The enigmatic Bobby Fischer, who spent some time in Japan before taking up residence in Iceland? Nope. It’s not local computer-chess master Larry Kaufman, either. The progenator of the above truism is actually the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. Anybody jonesing for both Wu-Tang-style beats and back-rank checkmates can get a taste of both at the fourth annual Bum Rush the Boards Hip-Hop Chess Tournament.

Part of DC Hip-Hop week, the event pitches chess to the “hip-hop generation” as a model way of “overcoming through strategic struggle.” Along with a four-round tourney (which is open to beginners and computer-besting pros alike), the festival offers free how-to workshops on hip-hop, poetry, and graffiti. RZA won’t be there, but he endorsed the combination of cultures at a similar event last year: “[T]he sword play is hip-hop, a battle lyrically, on the 64 squares, challenged intellectually.”

THE EVENT TAKES PLACE ON SATURDAY FROM 11 A.M.-6 P.M. AT THE COLUMBIA HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER, 1480 GIRARD ST. NW. FREE. (202) 667-1192.

The RZA and other rap stars will not be there because this is not an Hip-Hop Chess Federation event.

RZA is the Dir. of Development of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation. They are the only group that gets kids chess masters, rappers and athletes together.

This is another organization using the momentum of the HHCF to do something positive for their community. Its not the HHCF, but I guess its Hip-Hop Chess. I wonder what Adisa thinks?
