        It is not good that some of the world’s top players are not playing in these events. Without Anand, Carlsen, etc. it is hard to promote the world cups. The concept is flawed, imho. For many serious players it is interesting to follow this tournament, nevetheless.

        To answer GM Golubev, I think it is now understood that these are not billed as “world championships” the way they used to be. My “A” rating was on that basis. The fact that it is now a qualifier tournament, in that sense discouraging those who have already qualified, increases the likelihood of someone else making an electrifying run, such as we had with Navara, Zherebukh, Dominguez Perez and Bruzon, and of course Judit Polgar.

        The title “World Cup” may thus be a misnomer, but it’s established and fine.
