Thirteen-year-old Margaret Hua of St. Louis is the top seed in the Ninth Annual Susan Polgar Girls’ Invitational chess tournament that gets under way today at Webster University.

The competitors include 48 of the top U.S. players ranging in age from 6 to 18. More than $100,000 in chess prizes and scholarships will be awarded, including four-year $13,000-a-year scholarships for the first- and second-place finishers.

The opening ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Loretto Hilton Center on the Webster University campus, 130 Edgar Road in Webster Groves, followed at 2:30 p.m. by the first round of the tournament.

The second and third rounds will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fourth and fifth rounds will be at the same times on Thursday, and the final round will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

All events are free and open to the public.

Polgar, a chess grandmaster and world and Olympiad champion, will attend. She relocated her Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence to Webster University from Texas Tech University in June. In addition, all members of the reigning collegiate champion Texas Tech “A” chess team are transferring to be enroll at Webster this fall.
