Hungary, Germany take gold at Mitropa Cup 2012

Mitropa Cup 2012 for men and women was held at Solaris Hotels Resort Šibenik, Croatia, from 30th May to 8th June, 2012.

Mitropa Cup 2012 was played according to FIDE Laws of Chess and the Team Round Robin system of play, with 9 rounds for men’s and 7 rounds for women’s selections.

Each federation is represented by a team of four players and one reserve for men’s section and two women players and one reserve for women’s section and one team captain.

Hungary held a good lead heading into the final round of the men’s section and a quick tie with Austria cemented their first position. Nevertheless, the 2nd placed Slovenia pushed hard against Italy and scored a 3-1 victory, helping Croatia to catch the bronze medal by beating France, also 3-1.

The winning team featured GM Erdos Viktor 2624, GM Rapport Richard 2577, GM Banusz Tamas 2582, GM Papp Gabor 2552 (former SPICE member) and FM Fodor Tamas Jr 2502.
