      Il super GM Judit Polgar

      Dario, Italy, Judit Polgar

Strange that it’s not ‘La Super GM’!

OK, no Italian speaker has jumped in to translate, so let me try to provide one about Elo 2000 compared to the strength of Babel”fish”:

        ——————————–
But the real bombshell news is the presence in the lineup of the Abruzzan team Chieti of an absolute world-class star! A “TN” [*] that will thrill not only the players but also the spectators…

Indeed, playing first board will be the legendary Judit Polgar! Not just the number one woman player in the world, but above all a player at the pinnacles of the world for over a decade, who has excelled everywhere. Judit became a GM in 1991 when only 15 years old, and became the first woman to take part in a world championship finals event in 2005 (the 8-player tournament won by Topalov in San Luis), while in 2007 she qualified for the candidates’ matches. Another highlight was her second-place finish at the 2003 Corus in Wijk-aan-Zee.

[From the link to the rest of the article:]

Her participation will also be a galvanizing factor for young female Italian players, who are growing in number thanks to the activity of teaching practice in diverse regions of the country, and who see in her a role model to imitate or at least identify with. —thus stimulating in general the rosy picture of growing interest in Italian chess. [Thus we have] another contribution to make this goal a reality, coming after the recent establishment of the CISF [Italian Women’s Team Championship].

And if that were not enough of an attraction for spectators and fans, Judit’s playing style is also especially aggressive and spectacular—not for nothing is she considered one of the fiercest battlers in the Olympic arena of 64 squares [**]. Another supremely important feature to boost the prospects of the Abruzzan team, who certainly seek to rise to final victory, is the composition of the remaining players: GM Carlos Garcia Palermo, IMs Carlo D’Amore and Roberto Mogranzini, and the strong FM Mario Sibilio.

This great news already calls for some acknowledgments and thanks…
        —————————–

Translator’s notes: [*] I’m not sure which sense of “novella” (novelty, debutante, nova star) to use here, so I made up a chess meaning “TN”. [**] I replaced the long Italian clause here by a shorter one with “attraction” earlier in the sentence. Generally, in many places I’ve avoided using a direct English word translation, such as “considerations” for the very last word, because the Italian version [[considerazioni]] has a different set of senses, and I think my paraphrases capture the intended senses more accurately. Let native Italians judge me…but one absolutely clear case is translating “la mitica Judit Polgar” using “legendary”, as in English “the mythical Judit Polgar” would express doubts about whether she exists…!

Got more coffee to lengthen my break :-), so here’s the first paragraph too:

        ——————————–
Fabulous development for the CIS Master [Italian Master Team Championship]!!

March is about to end. A little more than a month now separates us from the great team challenge that will make the Valdostan town of Arvier into a battlefield, and emblazon on the prize banner the title of the Italian Master’s League, for us the badge of honor. The precise dates for these happenings are May 1–4, as indicated by the entry on the [Italian Chess] Federation website.

        But the real bombshell news…
        ———————-

More notes: “Palio” is recognized as an allusion to the centuries-old annual horse race of that name in Siena, and names the banner which is the prize. Hence the medieval allusion of battle in chess is fitting. To answer commenter #2, although one can feminize GM = “gran maestro” into “gran[de] maestra” in Italian, I think the meaning of “maestra” is more limited to “teacher”. Well, what is a female orchestra conductor called now?

And I could say more about how “motivo di soddisfazaione” has a more active meaning than the literal English “motif of satisfaction”, or add that “reflections” may be a better word for “considerazioni”…but back to work now.

Ah, my good dictionary says that “novella” is an “archaic” word for “news”…so the second sentence is “Some good news that will thrill…”
