        Adhiban wins in style

Chennai: Baskaran Adhiban of Velammal School, Chennai won the prestigious 47th National Premier chess championship in style with a round to spare at Mumbai on Sunday.

Adhiban, 17, becomes the second youngest to win the prestigious title after Viswanathan Anand won it at the age of 16.
        Stunning performance

Adhiban has clocked a stunning rating performance of 2698. He has gained about 32.5 Elo points from this event.

Speaking to The Hindu, Adhiban said he defended correctly and when Abhijeet Gupta made the mistake he latched on to the point.

Abhijeet pushed a drawn ending hard and lost in 89 moves in a rook ending. Adhiban has reached 9.5 points from 12 games and has established a 1.5-point lead with just the last round to be played.

Behind him on 8 points are: S.P. Sethuraman, Sriram Jha and Vidit Gujrathi.
        19th player

The win on Sunday takes him into the history books of Indian chess as the 19th player and sixth from Tamil Nadu to have won the event.

What next? He would like to complete the GM norms. He is taking part in the Asian Team Championship at Kolkata from this month end and playing for India ’B.’

Adhiban was excited that he had won this at age 17. His last round opponent on the top table on Sunday is S.P. Sethuraman, only 16.

Sethuraman helped Adhiban by defeating Sriram Jha with the black pieces in 42 moves to set up the title for him.

Adhiban is sure of the Rs. 100,000 cash prize and the trophy and also a 13-game GM norm now. This title should certainly be more valuable than the World under-16 title he won at Vietnam in 2008.

The race for the top six places will see quick draws on Monday. The results (round 12): Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) 7 lost to B. Adhiban (TN) 9.5, Sriram Jha (LIC) 8 lost to S.P. Sethuraman (TN) 8, S. Kidambi (PSPB) 7.5 drew with Vidit Gujrathi (Mah) 8, G.N. Gopal (PSPB) 7 lost to Abhijit Kunte (PSPB) 7.5, Arun Prasad (PSPB) 7.5 bt Swapnil Dhopade (Mah) 6.5, Prathamesh Mokal (Mah) 7.5 bt Neelotpal Das (PSPB) 6.5, R.R. Laxman (Rly) 7 bt B.T. Muralikrishnan (Rly) 6, N. Srinath (TN) 6 lost to P.M. Thipsay (Mah) 7, K. Priyadharshan (TN) 7 bt Rahul Sangma (Del) 6, Deepan Chakkravarthy (PSPB) 5.5 lost to Deep Sengupta (PSPB) 6, Tejas Bakre (AI) 5.5 drew with Somak Palit (Rly) 5.5. — Arvind Aaron
