Jeremy Hill Bear Shooting: Man Could Face Jail Time For Killing Grizzly In His Yard

First Posted: 8/25/11 12:22 PM ET

      Updated: 8/25/11 01:35 PM ET

Jeremy Hill of Idaho is facing a trial, after he shot and killed a grizzly bear that came into his yard.

Hill claims that he came into the yard where his children were playing to find three grizzly bears had entered the property. He shot one of the bears, killing it and scaring the others away.

Hill reported the incident to the state authorities, who did not express concern. But federal authorities have charged Hill with killing an endangered species.

The case has stoked passions has attracted many supporters, including Idaho’s republican governor Butch Otter. If convicted, Hill could face a year in prison or a $50,000 fine.

Hill’s trial is scheduled to begin on October 4th.

Rule #1: Don’t talk to cops.

Rule #2: Don’t talk to cops.

Rule #3: Don’t talk to cops.

Rule #4: Go back to rule #1.

        Let’s recap the guy’s actions:

He walks into his backyard, where his children are playing, and discovers that there are three grizzly bears. He finds the time to go back inside the house, get a riffle, unlock it (I assume the weapon was safely and lawfully stored), load it, return to the yard and shoot a bear.

In half that time he could have gotten his children safely inside and called wildlife services.

If anything, he endangered his children by choosing the longer course of action.

I don’t know that he should be prosecuted, but he used poor judgement.

Endangered species are more valuable than human life. What a logic is it!?

What’s this got to do with chess? How about making the right move? His kids are alive. That’s more than acceptable.
