      Interview with GM Ye

      Chess interview, China

This is the interview with GM Ye of China after the Chinese team defeated China 4-0:

At the end of the second round the coach of the leading Chinese team Grandmaster Ye Jiangchuan became the guest of the press-center. We’d like to remind you, that according to the results of the second round the Chinese team won with a score 4:0.

      – Grandmaster Ye, what is your impression of the victory?
      – It was luck.

      – You won with a big score; it can be really explained just by luck.
      – Our two first boards played quite well, for the rest two boards it was more a luck, it’s true.

      – What is the peculiarity of women chess for you?
      – Women are real fighters, they are very enduring, and they struggle till the very end. For me it’s more interesting than men chess.

      – Was the absence of Ekaterina Kovalevskaya at the board a surprise for you?
      – I was very surprised and up to the last moment I was sure that Ekaterina would play.

      – Did you feel a relief when you learnt that she wouldn’t play?
      – Not especially. Other players of the Russian team can do a lot as well. In particular, a young chess player Elena Tairova, in my opinion, represents a big threat.

I found this interview very interesting. Especially, the lines above.

There is no luck in chess. Well I guess you could say, “I was lucky, my opponent had a heart attack and died.” But in a pure sense there is no luck in a game with no randomness.

Yes, the comment about women’s chess compared to men’s chess is very interesting. I also notice this. When there are big tournaments with men only most of the time the top few boards will just agree for a non-fighting draw but with women’s tournaments is it possible to see mostly decisive games each round. Someone should do research on this in the databases and see how many women-women games compared to men-men games are decisive and drawn.

        Great interview with GM Ye!
