      Philippines, Rogelio Antonio

Pinoy wins chess championship in LA
      January 5, 2009

MONTEREY PARK – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. continued his winning streak in the US as he emerged over-all champion in the recently held 10th Annual Joseph Ileto Memorial Open Chess Championships at the Monterey Park, California. Antonio bested compatriot Fide Master Joel “Cholo” Banawa in the fourth round then proceed to a draw with American international master Jack Peters in the fifth and final round to secure the over-all win.

The former University of Manila (UM) stand-out actually finished in a tie for top place with FIDE Master Takahashi Iwamoto with 4.5 points after five rounds of play. However, Antonio edged the Japanese after tie break points was applied. Antonio’s US stint is being supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., Philippines Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez and Filipino boxing idol Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

It is about time. We were waiting for you!

And you are right, Campo is numero uno 12 million pesos crook, no doubt. Yoya Pinay.

Read my lips, Honorable Pichay is sponsoring Joey’s stints in the U.S. Pichay is the true savior of Philippine chess.

Campo is the saviour, for himself, as he fleeced and set back Philippine chess for his over 50 years of manipulating people and stealing sponsors’ money.

And sorry, you must be Campo’s many queridas.

Campo and his cohorts are old story and cannot continue to fool the chess world. It is obvious to all that Pichay’s leadership has surpassed Campo’s reign.

So stop the foolishness Pinay, et al already. We know who you really are.

You are just proving Campos’ crooked style of fooling people.

Joey and Eugene are not past their prime and should still be able to elevate the Philippine’s standings in the chess world. At the same time they can give valuable playing exposure to our young chess talents by playing in local tournaments.

They should get prepared next time to get themselves in shape and prepare for the qualifying tournament for the Philippine team.

        Go Pichay! Go Pacquiao!
