Jason Manley, a Grade 11 student at Bernice MacNaughton High School

Winners in Grades 1 to 12 to represent N.B. at nationals

Hundreds of knights will fall Saturday as more than 350 students gather at École Mathieu-Martin for the New Brunswick Provincial Chess Challenge.

Students in kindergarten to Grade 12 will compete for top honours and a chance for those in Grade 1 to 12 to represent the province at the national championships in Montreal May 23 and 24. New Brunswick was the top Atlantic province at the national competition last year.

New Brunswick Chess’n Math Association co-ordinator Ghislaine Johnson says New Brunswick has been holding a provincial championship for school students for close to 20 years now.

Every student plays at least five games during the competition, which adds up to a whole lot of chess in one day. And that’s just the official games. Johnson says students often play practice games between their competitive match ups.

Jason Manley is hoping to defend his provincial title Saturday and win another trip to the national competition.

…The general public is invited to the event and Johnson says they usually get up to 1,000 spectators.
