      After beating Portisch to catch up with Khalifman, Vaganian inexplicably lost to him in 21 moves, giving the title to Khalifman.

      Final round results:

      Khalifman – Vaganian 1-0
      Mecking – Beliavsky ½–½
      Timman – A. Sokolov ½–½
      Ribli – Andersson ½–½
      Suba – Chiburdanidze ½–½
      Portisch had a day-off.

      Here are the final standings:

      1. Khalifman 7
      2. Vaganian 6
      3. Beliavsky 5 ½
      4-6. Andersson, Ribli, Mecking 5
      7-9. A. Sokolov, Chiburdanidze, Portisch 4 ½
      10-11. Suba, Timman – 4

        I have to play over that game to see what occured! Great to see these older players competing still.

        Nothing surprising about this tournament – Khalifman won and Andersson played ten straight draws
