      Kostenko beats Negi, stays in front

      NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan defeated Indian hopeful Parimarjan Negi to stay in sole lead with seven points after the seventh round of the 7th Parsvnath International chess tournament, on Friday.

      A group of 10 players, including six-time national champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Abhijit Kunte and Dibeyandu Barua trail the leader by a full point.

      Ganguly defeated Deep Sengupta, Kunte got the better of young IM Shyam Sundar while Barua beat Matta Vinay Kumar.

      Playing the black side of a Winawer variation in the French defence game, Kostenko displayed a fine tactical game to overcome Negi in 53 moves.

      In the second board, International Master SP Sethuraman held Russian Grandmaster Mikhail Ulibin after 34 moves.

      Meanwhile, upsets continued in this edition of the tournament with experienced Praveen Thipsay losing his seventh round match to Vishnu Prasanna and Shashikant Kutwal stunning highly rated Uzbek Grandmaster Safin Shukhrat.
