      Life-sized chess match squared off

      City, school leaders square off in life-sized chess match

      The fur on the king’s hat was blowing in the wind, the sun shining over his court – then the enemy took its first victim.

      “D4 to C3!” Lansing schools Superintendent E. Sharon Banks yelled.

      “This will not go unanswered,” opponent Mayor Virg Bernero called back, and Banks’ bishop joined his fallen knight in jail.

      Today’s life-sized chess game at Lansing City Hall, complete with costumed kids and giant squares, had finally heated up.

      “We have a fight. The blood is beginning to spill,” instructor B. Michael Williams said, the kids mirroring his devilish grin.
