Promoted Joseph Nyambalo took an early lead in the Lab Enterprise Southern Region Chess League championship on Saturday at Polytechnic.
Playing in Section A of the championship for the first time, Nyambalo collected three points during this year’s first tournament to stay at the top.
The lead has given Nyambalo hope and confidence that he can clinch the quarterly championship on his first attempt.
Nyambalo will be looking for at least two wins during the second edition of the finals to take place on Thursday Chilembwe Day.
Closely following Nyambalo is Steve Mpighu, who also has three points after three rounds of Swiss pairing.
Former Lab champion Chiletso Chipanga is third with two points while Kajani Kaunda and Francis Banda, are on fourth and fifth positions respectively having collected two points each.
Three players Gilton Mkumbwa, Andrew Chalemba and Samson Nkhwazi are tied at one point each but they were separated by Buccholz tie break.
Defending champion James Kamowa was soundly defeated and he was pushed to ninth position after failing to collect a point.
Well-known Rumbani Mkamanga anchored the table after finishing behind Kamowa.
