      Mamedyarov defeated Caruana in playoff to win Gashimov Memorial

      Azerbaijani chess player wins Vugar Gashimov chess memorial

      Azerbaijani grand master Shahriyar Mammadyarov has become the winner of Shamkir Chess Tournament commemorating late grandmaster Vugar Gashimov in Azerbaijan’s Shamkir.

      He and Italy`s Fabiano Caruana both scored 8 points, but Mammadyarov claimed the title thanks to a win over the Italian in the 8th round.

      The leaders’ board is as follows: Mamedyarov – 6 points; Fabiano Caruana (the US) – 6, Anish Giri (the Netherlands) – 5.5, Sergey Karyakin (Russia)  – 5, Rauf Mammadov (Azerbaijan) – 4.5, Pendyala Harikrishna (India), Teymur Radjabov, Eltaj Safarli (Azerbaijan) – 4, Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine) – 3.5, Hou Yifan (China) – 2.5.
