Nakamura with perfect score in Grand Pacific Open

The Grand Pacific Open, British Columbia’s largest chess tournament, saw its 6th edition on Easter 2012, April 6-9th, in Victoria, Canada. The prize fund this year has been increased to a guaranteed $5000. The main event was a 6-round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss.

Super-Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura convincingly won the main group by defeating all six opponents to finish with the perfect score. Clear second is the last year winner WGM Nino Maisuradze.

The tournament hall was the very nice ballroom at the 5 Star Grand Pacific Hotel. The hotel is located on the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria, close to tourist destinations and across the street from the Seattle Clipper and Coho ferry connections.

      Grand Pacific Open final standings:

      1. GM Hikaru Nakamura 2731 – 6.0

Nakamura rules. He’ll win all events with perfect score.

Remember last year when Nakamura skipped the US Championships even though he lives in St. Louis where it was held, citing the excuse that he wanted to prepare for the ‘tougher’ international events? If that was the case, why on earth is he playing in such a low rated (for him) swiss?
