      Nisha holds top seed

      NEW DELHI: Woman Grandmaster Nisha Mohota caused a sensation by holding top seed Zhao Zong-Yuan of Australia in 46 moves in the second round of the Sydney International Open chess tournament in Sydney on Thursday.

      It turned out to a fruitful opening day for the Indians after eight of them became part of the 14-player leaders’ pack with two points each.

      The results (involving Indians):

      Second round: Nisha Mohota (1.5) drew with Zhao Zong-Yuan (Aus, 1.5); Neelotpal Das (2) bt Max Illingworth (Aus, 1); Samuel Minor (1) lost to Abhijit Kunte (2); Deepan Chakkravarthy (2) bt Neil Wright (Aus, 1); Gareth Oliver (Aus, 1) lost to Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (2); Deep Sengupta (2) bt Eugene Schon (Aus, 1); Sriram Jha (1.5) drew with Pon Krithika (1.5); S. Satyapragyan (2) bt Andrew Bird (Aus, 1); Daniel Howard Fernandez (Sin, 1.5) drew with K. Ratnakaran (1.5); Akshayraj Kore (1.5) drew with James Watson (Aus, 1.5); Amruta Mokal (1) lost to Xie George Wendi (Aus, 2); Kerry Stead (Aus, 1) lost to Eesha Karavade (2); Yuan Yi (Aus, 1) lost to Swati Ghate (2).

      First round: Adoulla Zibaei (Iri) lost to Das; Kunte bt Alek Safarian (Aus); Jason Chan (Aus) lost to Deepan; Chowdhury bt Hilton Bennett (Nzl); Angelito Camer (Aus) lost to Deep; Richard Voon (Aus) lost to Jha; Helen Milligan (Nzl) lost to Satyapragyan; Ratnakaran bt Levi Descallar (Aus); Fedja Zulfic (Aus) lost to Kore; Eesha bt Alexandra Jule (Aus); Swati bt Hamish Selnes (Aus); Nisha bt Lee T.
