Peru wins South American chess championship

Lima, Dec. 21 (ANDINA). Peru won the VII South American Youth Chess Championship held at the coliseum of Universidad de Piura in Lima on Wednesday.

The competition brought together talented chess players from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador and French Guyana.

The head of the Peruvian Chess Federation (FPA) Milton Iturry praised the performance of players, whose age range from 8 to 18 years old and are considered the future of said sport.

Iturry also hailed the participation of the Peruvian team which won 8 gold medals out of the 10 events to ratify the excellent moment of Peruvian chess in international competitions.

“This confirms that Peru is a chess power in Latin America. We won most of the medals and obtained a significant amount of points compared to other countries with one category remaining,” he said.
