One of the poster girls of Indian sport, chess player Tania Sachdev speaks about all that is most meaningful to her.

What the real Tania is like

The real Tania is what you see. There’s nothing different or hidden from anybody. Just like everybody else, I love to enjoy life each moment. When I am playing, I concentrate on just that. And when I am not playing or practising, watching movies and finding new places to eat with family and friends tops my list — as food is my weakness. Friends and family are my strength.

The journey

At different stages in my life, I wanted to do different things. There was a time when I wanted to become a news reader on national television. Another time, I wanted to become a makeup artist. But ever since I started playing chess, I wanted to achieve the best I could in the sport. I think I have done well for myself so far. But there is a lot more to do. The Arjuna Award was the national recognition of my achievements and the proudest moment of my life.

The game

Chess is an integral part of my life and I think it will stay with me forever, in some form or the other.

An unconventional interest

Chess happened accidentally. When I was six, I was gifted a chess board. I agree it is an unconventional sport and not that viewer-friendly. However, it requires a lot of mental and physical strength to be able to play for five to six hours at a stretch. You really need to be fit with loads of stamina.

Tackling failure and success

I have faced failure at different stages of my career. Generally, I accept it as a part of a sportsperson’s life, but it can be tough, and that’s when you need your family, coach and friends to talk you through such times. Success is always sweet, and I have lived and enjoyed each moment of it. It is the real reward for all your hard work through the years.

Unique qualities

Well, I think I am like any young girl, no different. Yes, I have led a different life from many other girls my age. I have been playing since I was seven. I think I need my space and look at things in a more analytical and practical way. I am able to find solutions for many complications that are a part of a sportsperson’s life.

Plans for the year ahead

After winning the bronze medal at the chess Olympiad, I want to complete my GM title and would like to figure in the top 25 women players of the world.
