      Ponomariov turns 25

      Birthday, Ponomariov

      By Chess Today

Ukrainian GM Ruslan Ponomariov celebrates his 25th birthday today. In 2002 he defeated his compatriot Vassily Ivanchuk 4½-2½ in the final of the FIDE World Championship. Alas, his “unification” match against Kasparov never materialised.

With his current rating of 2719, Ponomariov is No 22 in the world. His best rating so far was 2743 (April 2002) when he was No 6 in the world.

Seems like he’s been here forever. 25…wow.
I wonder if perhaps the chess world has written him off a bit too quickly.
