Sachini retains title with one round to spare

      Chess Nationals

Sri Lanka’s sole Women’s International Master (WIM), Sachini Ranasinghe of Musaeus College, retained her national title with a clear 1.5 point lead over PR Senanayake (University of Moratuwa) and Y Methmali (Sri Jayawardenapura University) at the end of the 12th round of the ongoing National A Championships.

The tournament, organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka with part sponsorship from Etisalat ends today, but Ranasinghe is too far ahead for her challengers to catch.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s event, Dulan Edirisinghe (Paul Morphy Chess Club) and Isuru Alahakoon (Navy) both won their 12th round games, and share the lead with 8 points each with one more round to go.

They are hotly pursued by Nalandian schoolboy Udith Jayasundara (7.5), with defending champ Chamika Perera (Trinity), RS Kalugampitiya (University of Peradeniya) and former national champ GC Anuruddha (Navy) still having an outside chance with 7 points each.

Alahakoon and Edirisinghe will pair off with Prasanna Kurukulasuriya and GC Anuruddha respectively, both leaders having to play with the black pieces, making for an interesting final round.
