School teacher wins 9th chess title

      Fiji, Manoj Kumar

School teacher wins 9th chess title
      Amit Raj
      Thursday, October 21, 2010

CANDIDATE master Manoj Kumar has clinched the Fiji Chess Federation grand prix and will represent the country at the Oceania Championship in Rotorua, New Zealand next year.

The Saint Vincent College schoolteacher won a total of nine events this year including successful title defence in the Courts Open and the Fiji Bitter Open Championships. “I think he (Manoj) did very well this year,” FCF president Dr. Virgilio De Asa said.

“He won the last two events and is in good form.”

Dr De Asa said Kumar’s only real opposition for the grand prix title came from fellow candidate master Calvin Prasad.

“Unfortunately Calvin had commitments and didn’t compete in the last two grand prix events. Otherwise they were close.”

He said FCF expected Kumar to do better in the Oceania Championship.

“He (Manoj) should give a better performance this time. He has gained quite good experience from recent international competitions so hopefully he can improve and obtain some more wins.”

Dr De Asa said depending on Kumar’s performance, he was likely to acquire the FIDE (World Chess Federation) masters title.
