International Master (IM) Enrico “Ikong” Sevillano shared first place honors with Grandmaster (GM) Varuzhan Akobian at the 2009 National Open Chess Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Akobian and Sevillano both finished with five points after six games of play.

Sevillano defeated GM Evgeny Bareev in the last round of the event, which was part of the Las Vegas International Chess Festival held over the weekend. Akobian, on the other hand, won over Laurent Fressinet.

Sevillano, a Cebu native, is a former US Open Champion. Meanwhile, trailing Akobian and Sevillano in the results list are thirteen players who tied for third place with 4.5 points. Another Filipino entrant, IM Ricky de Guzman, beat Kyle Morrison to join Fressinet and six others at 16th place. They all got 4.0 pointers. FM (FIDE Master) Hugo Villanueva, meanwhile, scored 3.0 points to land in the bracket of the 35th to 53rd placers.
