      Simul in Brownsville, Texas

      Brownsville, SPNO, Texas

Parents and players of all ages are taking part in this simul, one of the activities tonight at the Susan Polgar National Open in Brownsville, Texas.

I had to take a short break during the simul to give an interview to the NY Times, one of dozens of media sources today which inquired about Bobby Fischer.

By Sunday, we will be awarding over $100,000 in college scholarships, laptop computers, cash and chess prizes.

Can’t see you mentioned in the New York Times. There’s a long piece by Edward Rothstein though.
Fischer’s life gives one pause for thought. We should not expect ‘special minds’, excelling in one dimension, to be ‘average’ at everything else, and in many cases, they are poor at other things.
Also, I don’t think good chess players can use chess as a metaphor for non-chess world-issues. That is probably best left to the good writers and journalists.
Fisher’s life also points up the dangers of obsessions. Let us not forget that he gave the world more than most, when we think that he could have given so much more.
