Chess Champions to be featured on CBS Evening News Friday

      June 26, 2007 12:52 PM EDT

Brownsville ISD champion chess players, Fernando Mendez and Fernando Spada, will be featured on the CBS Evening News at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 29, on KGBT Channel 4.

The story will focus on the chess phenomenon in Brownsville and boys’ accomplishments at a young age, mastering a game of strategy and tactic. Both have already won state and national championships, are ranked in the top five in the country and just passed the fourth grade.

The champions are also already familiar with UTB/TSC. The boys work closely with the UTB/TSC chess players and the program and have even been awarded full scholarships to play at UTB/TSC once they graduate high school.

      Here is the full announcement.

It will just be a matter of time before these two fine young students become Brownville’s first native chess masters. Congratulations to both Spada and Mendez.
