The Reykjavik Chess Academy, together with the Icelandic Chess Federation, will host a chess marathon this weekend August 6th and 7th at Reykjavik City Hall, the venue for recent Reykjavik Open Chess Tournaments, where Iceland´s youngest chess talent will challenge the visiting public to a game of chess. Voluntary donations will raise funds for the Red Cross aid to victims of the Somalian famine.
The young chess players are truly living up to the „We are one family – GENS UNA SUMUS“ ideals of chess with the marathon event with their support for Somali children. The Red Cross distributes food aid to thousands of families in central and southern Somalia, across warring factions. Additionally, about 5000 children can access care in 40 nutritional support centers of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent in the country. The Red Cross is also operating 20 medical
clinics throughout Somalia and building water-related infrastructure facilities in the country´s driest regions.
The Reykjavik Chess Academy and the Icelandic Chess Federation jointly call on the chess loving public to unite behind the game´s global slogan to tackle some of the world´s most pressing issues.
