      Students compete in Lindsborg

      Area students compete in Lindsborg chess tournament

      Lindsborg, Kan. –
      LINDSBORG- Seventy-six chess players competed in the 2009 Smoky Valley Open Chess tournament held at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg on Saturday. Tenth grader Kyle Burris of Trinity Academy in Wichita, KS won the high school section with a perfect score of 6 out of a possible 6 points. Kyle has won first place in every Kansas Scholastic Chess Association (KSCA) tournament held so far this season. Twelfth grader Paul Masterson of Smoky Valley High School, tenth grader Charles Kinzel of McPherson High School, and home schooled students Gabriel Purdy, Noah Purdy, and Hannah Purdy tied for second place with 4.5 points each.

      The Purdy Home School Chess Club of Oxford, KS won the high school team title with a team score of 17 points. McPherson HS finished second with 15 points, and Valley Center HS finished third with 13.5 points.Sixth grader Sarah Myose of Sunrise Christian Academy won the middle school section with 5.5 out of a possible 6 points.

      Jesse Skupa of Valley Center Middle School and Cameron VanBaal of Pleasant Valley Middle School tied for second place with 4.5 points each. Concordia Middle School won the middle school team title with 15.5 points. Pleasant Valley Middle School finished second with 11 points, and Canton-Galva Middle School was the third place team with 4.5 points.
