      Svetushkin wins 53rd International Festival of Imperia

      Dmitry Svetushkin winner of the 53rd International Festival of Imperia

      The Moldovan GM Dmitry Svetushkin is the winner of the 53rd International Festival of Imperia, organized by the Chess Club of Imperia (Circolo Scacchistico Imperiese) that has ended yesterday afternoon in Imperia.

      “With 7 out of 9 points, demonstrating that the school of the former Soviet Union is still the best in the world – comments the President of the Chess Club Imperia , Gianni Rossi Cassani – Svetushkin has prevailed among a large group of challengers from many parts of the world like India, Serbia, Croatia, Byelorussia and Bulgaria”.

      The B tournament was won by the Bulgarian Simeonov Ventsislav while the Milanese Francesco Albano won the C tournament.

      This year the Imperia Festival saw at the starting line 161 participants in the four tournaments and 60 in the master tournaments, the most prestigious.

      This festival saw the presence of 6 Grand Masters and 11 International Masters, the two highest titles in this sport. All results can be found on www.imperiascacchi.it.

      In this 53rd edition the Italian champions played well. In particular the performance of the young Paolo Formento was fantastic, member of our circle which at the age of fourteen shined in the major tournament closing with 5 points and obtaining in a winning position a draw with the Russian GM Igor Efimov. Formento is approaching with great strides in achieving the master title.

      Imperia

      Meanwhile, the vice president and veteran of the Festival, Antonino Faraci, played well once again, collecting 4½ points.

      In the minor tournaments the local players did an excellent performance: in the B tournament shined with a good fourth place Fabio De Luca, in the C tournament the young Borrelli and Bianchimani. In the youth tournament, the member Jacopo Privetera has won dominating the final standings. Also did a good performance, Attilio Damiano, Nicolò De Luca, Valentina Ruo and Amerigo Novaro, all young and passionate of this sport.

      Cassani says: “The location of the Festival in the Palazzetto dello Sport turned out to be an excellent choice and appraised by all. The city of Imperia should be proud of an event that is repeated continuously for 53 years, an historical record hard to match, with the entire city that gains in terms of tourism and popularity”.

      Among these, the Checkers Club of Imperia contributes and organizes the 2nd International Checker Festival of San Remo which will take place at the Nyala Suite Hotel of San Remo (Via Solaro, 134) on January 5-8, 2012 – (www.sanremoscacchi.com).

      2-4. IM Arnaudov G. Petar 2484 BUL, IM Palit Somak 2363 IND and GM Maiorov Nikita 2558 BLR – 6.5
      5-9. GM Jirovsky Milos 2466 CZE, FM Zach Andreas 2344 GER, FM Kukov Velislav 2425 BUL, IM Jurek Josef 2337 CZE and GM Djuric Stefan 2463 SRB – 6.0 etc
