      FIDE, Tanzania

      BY JOSEPH MCHEKADONA
      7th October 2014

Federation of International Chess (FIDE) has sanctioned Tanzanian Vinary Choudary as the first arbiter after attending a course conducted in South Africa last month.

The Tanzania Chess Association ( TCA) chairman Geoffrey Mwanyika said Choudary attended FIDE arbiters seminar conducted in Durban for four days from September 25where he succeeded to become arbiter.

‘The Chess South Africa and under auspices of FIDE conducted the seminar at Durban’s International Convention Center under tutelage of Alex McFarlane from Scotland. FIDE lecturer and assistant lecturers were Gunther van den Berg from South Africa and England’s Lara Barnes,’ he said.

Choudary who is also the chairman of Tanzania Chess Foundation described his achievement as a milestone to the development of the game in the country.

He said the FIDE Arbiter (FA) title gives him an opportunity to officiate international events and Tanzania will benefit a lot as it will serve money of hiring FA from foreign countries.

Choundry said due to absence of FIDE arbiter in the country Tanzania Chess Association was hiring foreign arbiters during international games.

‘I attended the arbiters seminar in South Africa and managed to secure FIDE Identity Number is 21600015, 18 people attended seven of them were from the host nation, five from Zimbabwe, one each from Zambia, Malawi, India, Kenya and Latvia,’ he said.

The FIDE arbiter’s seminar was held alongside the World Youth Championships that saw Indian sensational Ninal Sarin emerging the champion in boys’ under ten category while Russian Drogovoz Irina was crowned the champion in girls’ category.

Tanzania did not send its juniors to the event.

Meanwhile, The Tanzania Chess Association with in collaboration with Tanzania Chess Federation donated chess boards and clocks to Miburani Secondary School in Temeke District.

Choundary said the donation is part of project of promoting chess in schools and Sunday Manara will be training the students while Nurdin Hasuji has been tasked to train Shaban Robert Secondary School players.

He urged Dar es Salaam Secondary Schools to apply for the chess kit donation and also training saying FIDE sent 100 kits to the Tanzania Chess Association to be donated to schools while his association provides trainers to interested schools.

‘The chess federation pays for trainers in Schools which have shown interest in the game,’ he said.
