Chess masters take on nation

TASMANIA’s junior chess champions will pit their skills against the country’s best at a national tournament next week as schools begin to take the game more seriously.
Some schools hire Black Square Chess, run by Mellissa Harvey and Ross George, to help students.
Ms Harvey’s daughter Meg, who attended Princes Street Primary School along with her other chess-playing siblings, works with her mum on the coaching.
“We have 18 in the chess club and we have a girls’ club too,” Ms Harvey said.
“I’m also contracted by Chesskids to do the tournaments.”
Princes Street won the state titles, just pipping Goulburn St Primary School. Cygnet Primary School came third.
The winning team of each of the top three will travel to Melbourne.
Grade 5 student Christos Klonaris, 11, said he enjoyed working on strategies.
“I’ve been playing since Grade 1,” Christos said. “I used to play my dad and lose — now I beat him.”
